1. Recycling Hair Clippings
Did you know that hair clippings can be repurposed? At our salon, we collect all the hair that we cut and send it to the Sustainable Salons program. From there, the hair is transformed into hair booms, which are used to soak up oil spills. These hair booms are more effective than traditional spill response materials because hair has a natural affinity to oil. By recycling our hair clippings, we are not only diverting waste from landfills but also contributing to environmental clean-up efforts.
2. Recycling Plastic Bottles and Containers
We are all too familiar with the sight of plastic bottles and containers piling up in landfills and polluting our oceans. That's why we take extra care to recycle all our plastic waste. Through the Sustainable Salons program, all our plastic bottles and containers are recycled and repurposed into garden furniture. This ensures that our plastic waste doesn't end up harming the environment and instead contributes positively to it.
3. Recycling Foil and Metal Colour Tubes
Did you know that aluminium is infinitely recyclable? That's why we ensure that all our foil and metal colour tubes are recycled and sold. The proceeds from these sales are then donated to programs that feed the homeless. By taking this step, we are not only ensuring that our waste is repurposed but also supporting a worthy cause.
4. Donating Ponytails to Make Wigs
Hair can be incredibly powerful and can bring tremendous joy and confidence to those who have lost theirs. That's why we collect ponytails that are 20cm or longer and send them to The Alopecia Foundation, where they are used to make wigs for those experiencing hair loss. By donating ponytails, we are giving back to our community and ensuring that our waste is put to good use.
5. Other Steps We Take to Minimise Our Impact
Apart from recycling our salon waste, we also take other steps to minimise our impact on the environment. This includes buying refills for in-salon products and cleaning products, using eco-friendly showerheads to reduce water use, air drying our towels, using grey water-safe cleaning products, stocking products that use post-consumer recycled plastic for their bottles, offering loose-leaf teas and plant-based milk, and refilling hair care products where possible. By taking these steps, we ensure that we are doing everything we can to create a more sustainable future.
